How to Straighten Curly Hair

Curly hairs do now allow a girl or boy to try different styles. The straight hairs on the other hand, make it easy for a guy or girl to try on any hair style. The smooth look of hair makes face look slimmer. Straight hairs are easy to manage for office goers and in rainy, windy or humidity weather.

The main aim of straightening hair is to give smooth, sleek and soft look to hairs.

Chemical treatments and use of natural products are two main options which are widely used for straightening curly hairs. Below is description of various methods along with their positives and side effects.

Natural methods involve the use of natural products. They keep luster of hairs and are not expensive.

  1. Use of oils.

Almond oil, coconut oil and sesame oil are best for relaxing and saturating the knots of curly hairs.

How to use them.

  • Heat oils for up to 20 seconds.
  • Apply on the scalp gently for up to 20 minutes.
  • Cover hair with wet towel for half an hour.
  • Wash hairs with any shampoo and use wide toothed comb when hairs are wet.
  • Do not use driers.

 

  1. Use of coconut oil.
  • Coconut oil not only does the straightening job but it also is great moisturizer. It provides luster and shine to hairs.
  • Mix coconut oil with lemon juice and keep in refrigerator
  • Let the cream come on the top and apply on the scalp.
  • Keep it applied for up to half an hour and then wash the hair
  • Comb the hair when still wet.
  • Let them dry without use of drier.
  1. Use of milk.
  • It is also one of the best moisturizers.
  • Milk should be mixed with some water and use over the curly parts or knots.
  • Let the hair absorb the milk for half an hour.
  • Shampoo the hair and use conditioner.
  • The milk protein also strengths the hair roots.
  • Drier is not used.

 

  1. Mix of eggs and olive oil.
  • Mixer of eggs and olive oil is applied on scalp and hairs.
  • Then comb the hair with wide tooted comb.
  • Shampoo the hair after half an hour.

 

  1. Fuller’s earth. Commonly known as multani mtit.

Fuller’s earth is mixed with water and one egg and two table spoonfuls of rice floor. The paste of one cup of fuller’s earth is mixed with one egg and two table spoonfuls rice floor.

  • Apply the paste on scalp and then wash with water after one hour.
  • Spray milk on hairs and then after 15 minutes shampoo hair and use conditioner.
  • Comb and air dry.

 

  1. Aloe vera.

 

Aloe vera easy goes inside the hairs strand moisturizers them. This naturally straightens the curly hairs.

  • Mix aloe Vera juice with olive oil. And massage the scalp.
  • After half one hour. Shampoo hairs and comb the wet hair.
  • Do not dry with driers.

 

  1. Apple cider vinegar:

 

Two tablespoonfuls of Apple cider vinegar is mixed with one cup of water. Wash hair with this mixed water only after washing them with shampoo.

  • Drier is not used.
  • It restores natural ph level of hair.
  1. Castor oil

This oil keep hairs hydrated. Castor oil is also conditioner and prevents frizzy.

  • Mix two tablespoonful of castor oil with one spoon of soybean oil.
  • Apply this mixer on scalp after heating for 20 seconds.
  • Shampoo hair after half an hour.
  • Comb wet hair and dry without use of drier.
  1. Celery leaves.

Another excellent source to straighten curly hairs.

  • Make juice of leaves and use like oil.
  • Keep hairs with oil for half an hour.
  • Comb with wide tooted comb to distribute the oil evenly
  • Shampoo wash and use conditioner

Positive side of natural remedies.

  • They bring good results without any side effect.
  • They are inexpensive.
  • They can be used two to three times in a week.
  • They also bring luster to hairs.
  • Most of these natural products also act as conditioners.

Negatives of natural remedies.

  • They have to be used for often to get result.
  • They do not give instant result.
  • Processes of their use may seem cumbersome to some users.
  • Other method which is not chemical bases is iron method.

Flatiron method

Flatiron is used to flatten the curly hairs. This method is quite easy and can be done at home as well. How it straightens the hair.

  • Wash hairs thoroughly.
  • Blow dries the hair.
  • Apply protective heat spray, which does not have oil or silicon.
  • Take one strand of hair and iron it
  • After ironing all strands, use hair silicon serum or spray or fixer. Spray is preferred for fine to thin hair while serum is used for thick or coarse hair.

 

Positives of iron method.

  • It can be done at home.
  • It is easy and instant method.

Negative of iron method.

  • Use iron on damp hair with damage the hair, because heat will boil the water in hair and that will break the hair.
  • Following ideas should be kept in mind when using this treatment.
  • The plates of flatiron should be gold or titanium coated.
  • Flatiron should have multiple temperature settings.

Permanents methods

  1. Chemical relaxer.

This method works by breaking the disulfide bond of the hair. Disulfide bond occurs when sulfides bond together. The sulfides are part of the keratin, the protein of the hair. Relaxers are available in two types. Lye and no lye.

Positives of chemical relaxing.

  • After the use of this treatment, other treatments like hot oil, ironing, pressing or pulling is not needed.
  • It is easy to wash and style hair.
  • Treatment is beneficial only if treatment is done after few months.

Negatives of relaxing.

  • It is damaging to the hair. Specially colored or henna colored hair can get badly damaged. vulnerable

In this method chemical is used to saturated hair which breaks the bonds. Then hairs are rinsed, blow dried, and flat ironed. After this the neutralizer is applied which put the hair in new straight position. The whole treatment takes more than 8 hours. It is good for medium curly types.

Negatives.

  • Cannot wash or ponytail the hair for next three to four days.
  • It gives only one style, straight hairs.

  1. Brazilian treatment also known as Brazil keratin treatment.

Here a chemical product called formaldehyde is used on hairs, before blow dry and flatiron.

  • It allows any kind of style with hairs.
  • After 2 – 4 months the nature texture returns.
  • Treatment can be applied on colored hairs.
  • Treatment keeps texture and volume

Negatives.

  • The formaldehyde can be dangerous to health is inhaled
  • The chemical stays in the hair for three to four days.
  • Some level of curly may remain.
  • It May not work on damaged or thin hairs.
  • Cannot wash hair for three –four days after the treatment.
  • Cost is $300- $600
